Scenic road through the green hills of northern Israel

Day Trips from Haifa

Crusader fortresses, sea grottoes, Galilee wineries, and biblical landscapes — all within an hour of your hotel.

Haifa's position in northern Israel makes it the ideal base for exploring the Galilee region and the Mediterranean coast. The UNESCO Crusader city of Acre is just 30 minutes by train. The dramatic Rosh Hanikra sea caves are an hour north. The Galilee wine country, Nazareth, and the Sea of Galilee are all within easy reach. A rental car gives you the most flexibility (₪150-220/day, $40-60), but organized tours handle logistics for the less accessible destinations.

📍 25 km (30 min by train/car)

Acre (Akko)

The jewel of northern Israel. Acre's UNESCO-listed Old City is a beautifully preserved Crusader fortress dating to the 12th century. Explore the underground Knights' Halls (Hospitaller fortress), the atmospheric Ottoman-era market (shuk), the 18th-century Al-Jazzar Mosque, and the Templar Tunnel. Acre is also famous for having the best hummus in Israel — the rivalry between Uri Buri's fish restaurant and Hummus Said is legendary. Walk the ancient sea walls at sunset for one of the most romantic views in the country.

How to get there: Train from Haifa Hof HaCarmel (30 min, ₪14, frequent), bus, or car via Route 4

Tip: Start at the Crusader Halls, then work through the market to the sea walls. Lunch at Hummus Said or Uri Buri. Go on a weekday to avoid crowds.

📍 40 km (1 hour by car)

Rosh Hanikra Grottoes

Dramatic sea grottoes carved into white chalk cliffs at the Israel-Lebanon border. A steep cable car (the world's steepest, at 60 degrees) descends the cliff face to interconnected sea caves where turquoise Mediterranean waves crash through tunnels and arches. The grottoes were formed over thousands of years by the relentless sea. Above, you can see the border fence with Lebanon and the old railway tunnel that once connected Haifa to Beirut. A truly spectacular natural site.

How to get there: Car or organized tour (no direct public transport). Parking available at the site.

Tip: Go on a day with moderate waves — calm seas mean less dramatic cave views, rough seas may close the grottoes. Morning light is best for photography.

📍 40-80 km (45 min - 1.5 hr by car)

Galilee Wineries

The Upper Galilee and Golan Heights produce Israel's best wines. The cool climate and volcanic soil create exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. Top wineries include Dalton (established, broad range), Galil Mountain (stunning views), Chateau Golan (Golan Heights pioneer), and smaller boutique producers like Pelter, Bazelet HaGolan, and Yarden. Most offer tastings (₪30-80) and some have restaurants on-site. A scenic drive through rolling green hills and Druze villages.

How to get there: Car strongly recommended (wine tasting requires a designated driver or organized tour). Tours from Haifa available.

Tip: Book a guided wine tour with transport to avoid driving after tastings. Visit 2-3 wineries max to avoid palate fatigue. Spring (April-May) is most beautiful.

📍 40 km (45 min by car)

Nazareth

The largest Arab city in Israel and the childhood home of Jesus. The Basilica of the Annunciation is the largest church in the Middle East — a striking modernist building (1969) over the traditional site where the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary. The Old City market is one of the best in Israel for Arab cuisine: knafeh, maqluba (upside-down rice), lamb shawarma, and spiced coffee. Visit the White Mosque, the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation (with its ancient spring), and the Nazareth Village living history museum.

How to get there: Bus from Haifa (Egged, ~45 min), car, or organized tour

Tip: The old market is the real highlight — spend time eating and wandering. Tishreen restaurant for upscale Galilean Arab cuisine. Combine with a visit to nearby Kafr Kanna (biblical Cana, site of the Wedding at Cana).

5
📍 65 km (1 hour by car)

Sea of Galilee (Kinneret)

The freshwater lake where Jesus walked on water, fed the 5,000, and called his disciples. Key Christian pilgrimage sites include Capernaum (ancient synagogue and St. Peter's house), the Church of the Multiplication (Tabgha, with its famous fish-and-loaves mosaic), the Mount of Beatitudes (Sermon on the Mount), and Yardenit baptismal site on the Jordan River. Beyond religious tourism, the lake offers hiking, kayaking, hot springs at Hamat Gader, and excellent St. Peter's fish at lakeside restaurants in Tiberias.

How to get there: Car (recommended, 1 hour via Route 77), or organized pilgrimage tour

Tip: A full day is needed to see multiple sites. Start at the Mount of Beatitudes for morning light, then Capernaum and Tabgha (all close together). Lunch in Tiberias on the waterfront.
