Haifa cityscape from Mount Carmel with Baha'i Gardens and bay views

Things to Do in Haifa

Sacred gardens, Arab street food, Carmelite monasteries, and panoramic Mediterranean views from Mount Carmel.

Haifa is a city built on layers — literally. From the port at sea level, through the historic neighborhoods of Hadar and Wadi Nisnas, up to the tree-lined streets of the Carmel Center at 300+ meters elevation, each level reveals a different facet of Israel's most diverse city. Most attractions are concentrated along the Mount Carmel slopes and can be explored on foot with the help of the Carmelit subway. Entry to most major sites — including the Baha'i Gardens, Stella Maris, Elijah's Cave, and the Louis Promenade — is free.

1
UNESCO World Heritage

Baha'i Gardens & Shrine of the Bab

Haifa's most iconic landmark: 19 concentric terraces of manicured gardens cascading nearly one kilometer down the northern slope of Mount Carmel. At the center stands the golden-domed Shrine of the Bab, the burial place of the founder of the Babi Faith. Completed in 2001 at a cost of $250 million, the gardens were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. With over 450 plant species, geometric lawns, stone eagles, fountains, and iron gates, this is one of the world's most breathtaking examples of landscape architecture. The terraces are perfectly symmetrical and visible from across Haifa Bay — especially stunning when illuminated at night.

⏱ 1.5-2 hours 💰 Free

Tip: Free guided tours at 9 AM daily (English). Book at bahai.org. Dress modestly — cover shoulders and knees. No food, drink, or smoking.

Food & Culture

German Colony (Ben-Gurion Boulevard)

The German Colony sits at the foot of the Baha'i Gardens along Ben-Gurion Boulevard. Founded by German Templers in 1868, the neighborhood is characterized by stone buildings with red-tile roofs, now beautifully restored into restaurants, wine bars, cafes, and boutiques. The boulevard leads directly to the lower entrance of the Baha'i Gardens, creating one of the most photogenic axes in Israel. Especially lively on weekday evenings and weekends.

⏱ 1-2 hours 💰 Free (dining ₪50-150)

Tip: Walk the full boulevard from the port up to the garden gate at sunset. Stop at Fattoush for upscale Arab cuisine or Hanamal 24 for craft cocktails.

3
Food & Neighborhoods

Wadi Nisnas

Haifa's vibrant Arab quarter is a labyrinth of narrow streets, murals, and hole-in-the-wall food stalls. This is where you come for the best falafel, hummus, knafeh (cheese pastry in syrup), and freshly baked taboon bread in the city. The annual Holiday of Holidays (Feast of Feasts) festival in December celebrates Hanukkah, Christmas, and Ramadan/Eid together — a unique expression of Haifa's coexistence culture. Street art murals commissioned by the Beit HaGefen Arab-Jewish Cultural Center cover many walls.

⏱ 1-2 hours 💰 Free (food ₪15-40)

Tip: Go at lunchtime for the freshest food. Abu Yusuf for hummus, Elias for falafel, and Anan for knafeh. Cash preferred.

4
Religious & History

Stella Maris Monastery

Perched at the summit of Cape Carmel, this Carmelite monastery (current building from 1836) is the spiritual home of the Carmelite Order, founded on Mount Carmel by Crusader-era hermits in the 12th century. The interior features a stunning painted dome ceiling depicting scenes from the Old Testament, a marble statue of the Madonna and Child, and a grotto beneath the altar believed to be where the Prophet Elijah lived. The views from the monastery terrace over the Mediterranean are extraordinary.

⏱ 30-60 minutes 💰 Free

Tip: Combine with the cable car ride from Bat Galim beach. The monastery is a 2-minute walk from the upper cable car station.

5
Sacred Sites

Elijah's Cave

A natural cave at the base of Mount Carmel, sacred to four religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and the Druze faith. According to tradition, the Prophet Elijah hid here from King Ahab and Queen Jezebel (1 Kings 19). The cave is divided into men's and women's prayer sections and remains an active pilgrimage site. The atmosphere is deeply contemplative — candles flicker, prayers murmur. A rare place where multiple faith traditions converge at a single point.

⏱ 20-30 minutes 💰 Free

Tip: Free entry. Dress modestly. Located below Stella Maris — combine both visits. Open Sun-Thu 8 AM-5 PM, Fri until 1 PM.

6
Sightseeing

Haifa Port & Waterfront

Haifa's port is one of the busiest in the eastern Mediterranean and the main cruise ship terminal in Israel. The waterfront area has been redeveloped with promenades, restaurants, and cultural spaces. The port area connects directly to the German Colony — a 10-minute walk that takes you from the sea to the foot of the Baha'i Gardens. Cruise visitors can explore on foot without needing transport. The old port warehouses are gradually being converted into galleries and event venues.

⏱ 30-60 minutes 💰 Free

Tip: Cruise ship passengers: walk from the port to the German Colony (10 min), then take the Carmelit up to Stella Maris for views.

Museums & Family

MadaTech — National Museum of Science

Israel's national science museum is housed in the original Technion building (the Israel Institute of Technology's first campus, built 1912). Interactive exhibits cover physics, technology, space, and the human body. The planetarium offers shows in English. The building itself — an elegant Ottoman-era structure — is worth visiting for the architecture alone. A top rainy-day activity and one of the best family attractions in Haifa.

⏱ 2-3 hours 💰 ₪59 ($16) adults

Tip: Allow 2-3 hours. English planetarium shows usually at 12 PM. Combined ticket for museum + planetarium is ₪79.

Museums

Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art

The only museum in the Middle East dedicated exclusively to Japanese art. Founded in 1959 by Felix Tikotin, it houses a rotating collection of woodblock prints (ukiyo-e), ceramics, lacquerware, textiles, and contemporary Japanese art. The museum sits on Hanassi Avenue in the Carmel Center neighborhood, surrounded by cafes and galleries. Small but impeccably curated — a serene and unexpected Haifa gem.

⏱ 45-60 minutes 💰 ₪35 ($10)

Tip: Visit on a weekday morning for a peaceful experience. The museum shop has beautiful Japanese-inspired gifts.

9
Views & Walks

Louis Promenade (Yefe Nof Street)

A tree-lined promenade along the crest of Mount Carmel offering what many consider the best panoramic views in Israel. From here you look down over the Baha'i Gardens, across Haifa Bay, past the port to Acre, and on clear days all the way to the hills of Lebanon. Benches, cafes, and shaded walkways make it perfect for a leisurely morning or sunset stroll. The upper entrance to the Baha'i Gardens is accessed from this promenade.

⏱ 30-60 minutes 💰 Free

Tip: Come at sunset for golden light across the bay. The promenade connects to several Carmel Center cafes and the Tikotin Museum.

10
Experience

Haifa Cable Car

The Haifa Cable Car (teleferic) connects Bat Galim beach at sea level to Stella Maris Monastery at the top of Cape Carmel. The 6-minute ride offers spectacular aerial views over the Mediterranean coastline, the city, and the port. While modest compared to alpine cable cars, it's a fun and scenic way to travel between the beach and the mountaintop. Operates daily except Shabbat.

⏱ 6 minutes (one way) 💰 ₪31 round trip ($9)

Tip: Buy a round-trip ticket for better value. Combine with Stella Maris and the beach — ride up, visit the monastery, walk down to Elijah's Cave.

11
Food & Markets

Carmel Market (Talpiot Market)

Haifa's main market in the Hadar neighborhood offers fresh produce, spices, baked goods, olives, cheeses, and local specialties at honest prices. Far less touristy than the markets in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem — this is where Haifa locals shop. The surrounding streets of Hadar, once the commercial heart of Haifa, are experiencing a revival with new cafes and artist studios opening in the old commercial buildings.

⏱ 1 hour 💰 Free (food ₪10-30)

Tip: Best on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Try the freshly baked kubaneh (Yemenite bread) and za'atar flatbreads.
