Jaffa Old City with Tel Aviv skyline in background

Things to Do in Tel Aviv

25 must-see attractions from ancient Jaffa to Bauhaus architecture, buzzing markets, and street art.

Tel Aviv packs an extraordinary amount into a compact, walkable city. Within a few kilometers you'll find a 4,000-year-old port city (Jaffa), 4,000+ Bauhaus buildings (UNESCO World Heritage), the Middle East's best food markets, world-class museums, and neighborhoods where every wall is covered in street art. Most attractions are free or inexpensive. Here are the essential experiences, ranked by our editors.

1
History & Culture

Jaffa Old City

One of the oldest port cities in the world (est. ~1800 BCE). Wander narrow stone alleys through the artists' quarter, past galleries and Ottoman-era architecture. The Wishing Bridge assigns zodiac signs to ancient lanes. From the hilltop park, you get the iconic Tel Aviv skyline photo. The adjacent Jaffa Flea Market (Shuk HaPishpeshim) is great for vintage finds, and the area around the Clock Tower has become a restaurant hotspot.

⏱ 2-3 hours 💰 Free

Tip: Go at sunset for golden light on the stone buildings and dramatic skyline views.

2
Food & Markets

Carmel Market (Shuk HaCarmel)

Israel's largest open-air market stretches for several blocks off Allenby Street. Overflowing with produce, spices, halva, fresh-squeezed juices (₪10-15), burekas (₪8-12), and every ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine. The side streets — especially HaKovshim and the Yemenite Quarter — hide some of Tel Aviv's best cheap eats. Friday before Shabbat is the most electric time to visit.

⏱ 1-2 hours 💰 Free (food ₪10-50)

Tip: Start at the Allenby end and work toward the Yemenite Quarter. Prices drop as you go deeper.

3
Architecture & UNESCO

White City Bauhaus Architecture

Tel Aviv has over 4,000 Bauhaus/International Style buildings — the world's largest concentration. Built in the 1930s-40s by Jewish architects fleeing Europe, they adapted the German Bauhaus style to the Mediterranean climate with balconies, small windows, and white plaster. Rothschild Blvd and Bialik Square are the epicenters. The Bauhaus Center on Dizengoff offers guided tours.

⏱ 2 hours (guided tour) 💰 Free-₪80

Tip: Free Saturday tours at 11 AM from the Bauhaus Center (46 Rothschild). Book ahead.

4
Culture & Nightlife

Rothschild Boulevard

The tree-lined boulevard at the heart of Tel Aviv. Independence Hall (where Ben-Gurion declared Israeli independence in 1948) is at #16. During the day it's a café and co-working scene; at night the kiosks along the boulevard become cocktail bars. The architecture is stunning — some of the best-preserved Bauhaus buildings line both sides.

⏱ 1-2 hours 💰 Free

Tip: Walk from Habima Square (national theatre) to Neve Tzedek for the full experience.

5
Neighborhoods

Neve Tzedek

Tel Aviv's oldest neighborhood (1887), now its most charming. Shabazi Street is the main artery, lined with boutiques, galleries, and restaurants. The Suzanne Dellal Centre is Israel's premier contemporary dance venue. Architecture ranges from restored Ottoman houses to modern design. It's expensive but beautiful — perfect for a morning coffee walk or upscale dinner.

⏱ 1-2 hours 💰 Free

Tip: Visit on weekday mornings for a peaceful stroll without the weekend crowds.

6
Art & Culture

Florentin Street Art

The Florentin neighborhood is Tel Aviv's street art capital. Every wall, shutter, and electrical box is a canvas. International and local artists constantly refresh the murals. The gritty-hip area also hosts Levinsky Market (spices, Iranian groceries, Georgian food), underground bars, and some of TLV's cheapest eats. It's the backpacker/creative heartland.

⏱ 1-2 hours 💰 Free

Tip: Start at Florentin St and wander south. Levinsky 41 craft beer bar is a local favorite.

7
Food & Markets

Sarona Market

Upscale indoor food market in a beautifully restored Templar colony compound (built by German Templars in 1871). Higher quality and higher prices than Carmel Market. Great for: craft beer tastings, artisan chocolate, sushi, wine bars, and Italian food. Air-conditioned — a refuge on hot days. The outdoor Sarona complex also has shops and restaurants.

⏱ 1-2 hours 💰 Free entry (food ₪30-80)

Tip: Thursday evening is the liveliest. Try the craft beer flight at one of the beer stalls.

8
Museums

Tel Aviv Museum of Art

Israel's premier modern and contemporary art museum. The Herta and Paul Amir Building is an architectural masterpiece by Preston Scott Cohen. Collections include Israeli art, European masters, photography, and design. Rotating exhibitions are consistently world-class. Located on Shaul HaMelech Blvd near the Performing Arts Center.

⏱ 2-3 hours 💰 ₪50 ($14)

Tip: Free entry on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The museum shop has excellent Israeli design souvenirs.

9
Shopping & Culture

Dizengoff Street & Square

Tel Aviv's main commercial street, recently renovated with wider sidewalks and bike lanes. Dizengoff Square (Zina Dizengoff Circle) features the iconic kinetic water fountain by Yaacov Agam. The street runs from the port area south through the city center. Best for: vintage shops, bookstores, bakeries, and Friday pre-Shabbat energy.

⏱ 1-2 hours 💰 Free

Tip: Friday afternoon on Dizengoff is peak Tel Aviv — locals buying challah, flowers, and wine.

10
Entertainment

Namal Tel Aviv (Port Area)

The renovated old port area at the north end of the beach promenade. Warehouses converted into restaurants, bars, a farmers' market (Fridays), and event spaces. Popular for weekend brunch and evening drinks. The wooden boardwalk with its signature wavy design is a Tel Aviv landmark.

⏱ 1-3 hours 💰 Free

Tip: Friday morning farmers' market is excellent. Evening: great for waterfront dining.
