Road winding through Israel's diverse landscapes

Day Trips from Tel Aviv

Jerusalem in 1 hour. The Dead Sea in 2. Israel is tiny — explore it all from your Tel Aviv base.

Israel is just 424 km from north to south and 114 km at its widest. From Tel Aviv, you can reach Jerusalem in 30 minutes by fast train, the Dead Sea in 2 hours, and Haifa in 1.5 hours. Renting a car gives you the most flexibility (₪150-220/day, $40-60), but organized tours handle logistics and include guides. Here are the top day trips, ranked by popularity.

📍 65 km (1 hour by train/car)

Jerusalem

The most popular day trip from Tel Aviv. Visit the Old City (Western Wall, Church of Holy Sepulchre, Via Dolorosa), the Israel Museum (Dead Sea Scrolls), Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial, and the bustling Mahane Yehuda market. The new fast train from TLV to Jerusalem takes just 30 minutes.

How to get there: Train (30 min, ₪25), bus (Egged 405, 1 hr, ₪16), organized tour ($75-120)

Tip: Start early. Dress modestly for religious sites (cover shoulders and knees). Friday markets close early for Shabbat.

📍 150 km (2 hours by car)

Dead Sea & Masada

Combine a sunrise hike up Masada (Herod's ancient hilltop fortress, UNESCO) with floating in the Dead Sea — the lowest point on Earth at -430 meters. The Dead Sea's 34% salinity makes you float like a cork. Ein Gedi Nature Reserve nearby has beautiful waterfalls and ibex sightings.

How to get there: Organized tour (most popular, $60-90), rental car, or Egged bus to Ein Bokek (3 hrs)

Tip: For the Masada sunrise, depart Tel Aviv at 3-4 AM. Apply Dead Sea mud, rinse, then float. Don't shave the day before — salt stings.

📍 55 km (50 min by car)

Caesarea

Spectacular Roman ruins on the Mediterranean coast. Herod the Great built this city in 25-13 BCE with a massive harbor, amphitheater, hippodrome, and aqueduct. The Roman aqueduct on the beach is one of Israel's most photogenic spots. The nearby Caesarea Golf Club and wine tasting add luxury options.

How to get there: Rental car (recommended), organized tour, or train to Caesarea-Pardes Hana + taxi

Tip: Visit the amphitheater first (opens 8 AM), then the aqueduct beach, then lunch at the old port restaurants.

📍 95 km (1.5 hours by train)

Haifa & Bahá'í Gardens

The stunning Bahá'í Gardens (UNESCO) cascade down Mount Carmel in 19 terraces overlooking the sea. Also visit the German Colony for cafés, Wadi Nisnas for Arab street food, and Stella Maris monastery. If you have time, continue to the Crusader city of Acre/Akko (30 min north).

How to get there: Train (1.5 hrs, ₪35, frequent), car, or organized tour

Tip: The gardens are free but guided tours must be booked in advance at the Bahá'í website. Morning tours offer the best light.

📍 150 km (1.5-2 hours by car)

Nazareth & Sea of Galilee

A longer day trip but rewarding. Nazareth has the Basilica of the Annunciation (largest church in the Middle East) and a vibrant old market. Continue to the Sea of Galilee for Capernaum, the Church of the Multiplication, and a boat ride. Biblical landscapes and excellent Arab cuisine.

How to get there: Rental car (best option), or organized Christian pilgrimage tour ($90-130)

Tip: Combine with a lunch in Nazareth's old market — the Arab food is among the best in Israel.

📍 15 km (15 min by car)

Herzliya

An upscale beach town just north of Tel Aviv, Herzliya is the closest getaway when you want quieter shores without the Tel Aviv crowds. The Herzliya Marina is lined with restaurants, cafes, and luxury hotels. The beaches here — Acadia, Apollonia, and Sidna Ali — are cleaner, calmer, and far less packed than Tel Aviv's main beaches. The Apollonia National Park on the cliffs above has Crusader fortress ruins and stunning Mediterranean views.

How to get there: Car or taxi (15 min), train to Herzliya station + short taxi, bus 501 (30 min)

Tip: Visit on a weekday for near-empty beaches. Pair with a seaside lunch at the marina. Apollonia National Park (₪22 entry) is worth the short detour for the cliff-top views.

📍 22 km (30 min by car)

Ramla

A truly off-the-beaten-path gem that most tourists never discover. Ramla's star attraction is the Pool of Arches (Breichat Ha-Keshitot) — a Crusader-era underground water reservoir from 789 CE where you can row a boat through the vaulted, dimly lit chamber. Also worth visiting: the White Tower (a 30-meter Mamluk-era minaret you can climb for panoramic views), the Great Mosque, and the colorful market. Ramla mixes Jewish, Arab, and Crusader history in a way few places in Israel do.

How to get there: Train (20 min, frequent, ₪13.50), car (30 min), bus (Egged, 30 min)

Tip: The Pool of Arches (₪18 entry) is the highlight — arrive early to have the underground cistern to yourself. Combine with the White Tower (₪10). Allow 2-3 hours total. The town market has excellent cheap falafel and pastries.
