Eilat vs Sharm El-Sheikh

Two Red Sea resorts, 250 km apart. Which one wins for diving, beach, and value?

See the comparison

Eilat (Israel) and Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt) sit on opposite sides of the Gulf of Aqaba, just 250 km apart by road and connected by the Taba border crossing. Both offer Red Sea diving, year-round warm water (21โ€“27ยฐC), and resort lifestyles. But the experiences are very different. Sharm is a pure resort destination โ€” cheaper, more sandy beaches, world-class diving (Ras Mohammed is legendary), and dominated by all-inclusive package tourism from Europe. Eilat is more expensive, smaller, but VAT-free, comes with Israel's security infrastructure, has tap water you can drink, and crucially, is the launching pad for a Petra day trip (3 hours via the Wadi Araba border). This guide compares both across 16 dimensions to help you decide.

Our recommendation

For a first trip to Israel: Eilat. It connects logically with the rest of Israel and Petra.
For a standalone diving/beach holiday: Sharm. Better diving, lower cost, easier from Europe.
For a regional combo: Fly into TLV โ†’ Israel route โ†’ Eilat โ†’ cross to Sharm via Taba โ†’ fly home from Sharm. Best of both worlds.

Frequently asked questions

Which has better diving: Eilat or Sharm El-Sheikh?
Both are excellent but Sharm has more variety. Sharm's Ras Mohammed National Park is one of the top 5 dive sites in the world, and the Tiran Strait and SS Thistlegorm wreck are legendary. Eilat's diving is more accessible (shore dives, no boat needed) and the coral reserve is well-protected, but the variety and dramatic walls are smaller.
Is Eilat or Sharm El-Sheikh cheaper?
Sharm is significantly cheaper. All-inclusive resorts start around $50/night and many premium ones are $100โ€“150/night. Eilat ranges $130โ€“250/night and rarely offers all-inclusive. Food, drinks, and tours are also cheaper in Sharm. Eilat is VAT-free which helps but doesn't close the gap.
Is Sharm El-Sheikh safe in 2026?
Sharm has improved significantly post-2015 and is now considered safe for tourists in the resort areas. The Egyptian government has invested heavily in security. Avoid the rest of the Sinai Peninsula (especially North Sinai). Always check your government's current travel advisory before booking.
Can I do both Eilat and Sharm in one trip?
Yes, via the Taba border crossing south of Eilat. From Eilat to Sharm is about 5 hours by road including the border. Many travelers fly into Eilat (TLV or Ramon) and depart from Sharm or vice versa. Note that you need an Egyptian visa ($25 e-visa) and an Israeli border departure tax.
Which has the best beaches?
Sharm has long stretches of sandy beach and natural lagoons (Naama Bay, Sharks Bay). Eilat's public beaches are smaller and more developed but the water is equally clear. For pure beach lounging, Sharm wins on size and variety.
Which is better for families?
Both are family-friendly. Eilat has unique attractions: Underwater Observatory Marine Park, Dolphin Reef, Ice Mall, Kings City. Sharm has larger family resorts with kids' clubs and water parks built in. For independent travel with kids, Eilat is easier; for resort-based family vacation, Sharm offers better value.
