Petra: from Eilat or from Amman?

Two routes to one of the New 7 Wonders. Which is better for your trip?

Compare routes

Petra is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World โ€” the rose-red city carved into rock by the Nabataeans 2,000+ years ago. There are two practical ways to visit: from Eilat (Israel) as a long day trip across the Wadi Araba border (~3 hours each way), or from Amman (Jordan) as part of a Jordan trip, with overnight options in Wadi Musa. The Eilat route is great if Israel is your main trip and you want to add Petra in one ambitious day. The Amman route gives you proper time at Petra (full day or two), the option to see it at sunrise/sunset/night, and the Jordan Pass which saves money. This guide breaks down the differences.

๐ŸŽฏ The verdict

Choose Eilat route if youโ€ฆ

  • Are on an Israel-focused trip and want to add Petra without a separate flight
  • Have only one day available for Petra
  • Are already in Eilat and want a "checked" Wonder of the World
  • Don't mind a long, exhausting day with limited time at Petra
  • Want a simple group day tour with all logistics handled

Choose Amman route if youโ€ฆ

  • Want to see Petra properly (1+ full days, including the Monastery)
  • Want Petra by Night, sunrise, or sunset experience
  • Plan to combine with Wadi Rum and other Jordan sites
  • Want to use the Jordan Pass to save on visa + entry fees
  • Are doing a Jordan-focused or multi-country regional trip

Our recommendation

For Israel-only trips: Day trip from Eilat. It's not ideal but it's the only practical option without flying separately to Jordan.
For regional tours: Cross at Allenby (Jerusalem) or Wadi Araba (Eilat), do Petra + Wadi Rum + Amman properly, fly home from Amman. Best of both worlds.
For Petra purists: Forget the day trip. Fly to Amman, get the Jordan Pass, give Petra 2+ days. You\'ll come back haunted (in a good way).

Frequently asked questions

Can I do Petra as a day trip from Eilat?
Yes, but it's a long day (12+ hours) with limited time at Petra (4โ€“5 hours). You cross the Wadi Araba/Yitzhak Rabin border, drive 2 hours to Petra, walk through the Siq, see the Treasury and main monuments, then return. You'll miss the Monastery, the High Place of Sacrifice, and the night experience. Worth it if you have one day; otherwise plan 2+ days from the Jordan side.
Is it cheaper to visit Petra from Eilat or Amman?
Amman is significantly cheaper if you get a Jordan Pass. The Pass costs ~$98 (depending on tier) and includes the Petra entry fee ($70 alone) plus visa waiver and entry to 40 other sites. From Eilat, you pay $56 visa + $70 Petra entry + $30 Israel border tax = $156 just in fees, plus the tour cost.
How long do I need at Petra?
A minimum of 1 full day to see the Siq, Treasury, Royal Tombs, and main areas (about 6 km of walking). 2 days lets you add the Monastery (steep climb but stunning), High Place of Sacrifice, and Petra by Night. Serious visitors do 3 days.
What is Petra by Night?
A candlelit walk through the Siq to the Treasury, illuminated by 1,500+ candles, with traditional music. Held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 8:30 PM. Costs ~$25 extra (not included in regular ticket or Jordan Pass). Magical but only possible if you're overnighting in Wadi Musa (the town next to Petra).
Should I get a Jordan Pass before crossing from Eilat?
Not really worth it for a day trip โ€” the Pass requires 4 nights in Jordan to waive the visa. For a single-day Petra trip from Eilat, just pay the visa at the border and the Petra entry separately.
Can I combine Petra day trip with Wadi Rum?
Yes, with a 2-day overnight tour from Eilat. Day 1: cross border, Petra. Sleep in Wadi Rum (Bedouin camp). Day 2: Wadi Rum jeep tour, return to Eilat. Total cost ~$300โ€“400 per person.
