Petra from Eilat vs from Amman: Which Route Is Best?

By The Visit Israel Editorial Team · Last updated

Petra is the unmissable add-on to a southern Israel trip — but should you reach it from Eilat or from Amman? It depends on the shape of your trip.

Choose Eilat if…

Your trip is centred on Israel and you want Petra without rerouting through Jordan. From Eilat, the border is minutes away and an organised day trip handles the crossing, visa and transport — see the border crossings guide. An overnight is strongly recommended if you can spare it: a single day at Petra is rushed.

Choose Amman if…

You’re dedicating several days to Jordan. Petra then sits within a richer loop — Wadi Rum, Jerash, the Dead Sea and the King’s Highway — and you’ll arrive less tired, with time for the longer trails (the Monastery, the High Place of Sacrifice).

The verdict

On an Israel trip, go from Eilat — ideally as an overnight. On a Jordan trip, base around Amman/Petra and give the site the time it deserves. Either way, build in buffer for border formalities and start with our Eilat guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit Petra as a day trip from Eilat? +

Yes. A Petra day trip from Eilat crosses at the Yitzhak Rabin / Wadi Araba border near Aqaba, then drives about two hours to Petra. It's a long but very doable day; organised tours handle the border formalities and Jordanian visa. An overnight gives you far more time at the site.

Is it better to see Petra from Eilat or Amman? +

From Eilat is best if you're on an Israel trip and want to see Petra without a long detour — the border is close. From Amman is better if you're touring Jordan, as Petra pairs with Wadi Rum, Jerash and the Dead Sea, and the drive down the King's Highway or Desert Highway is part of the experience.

How long does it take to get to Petra from Eilat? +

Plan roughly 2 to 2.5 hours of driving from the border to Petra, plus border-crossing time. Most Eilat day tours are long days of 12 hours or more; an overnight trip is more relaxed.
