- Masada sunrise hike
- The Snake Path takes 45–60 minutes from the base. Depart 90 minutes before sunrise to arrive at the summit before first light — and allow time to find a good spot before other hikers crowd the north terrace. Bring a head torch and at least 1.5 L of water.
- Dead Sea reflection photography
- Best light arrives 20–30 minutes after sunrise, when low-angle rays catch the mineral haze over the water. The north (Kalia) end of the Dead Sea has the least clutter on the Jordanian horizon. Arrive the night before and stay at Ein Bokek to be on-site at dawn.
- Bahá'í Gardens, Haifa
- Free guided tours depart at 9:00 am — check the window against sunrise in winter months. In summer (June–August), sunrise at 5:30 am means the gardens are in full morning light by tour time. Reserve at bahai.org in advance.
- Seasonal best times
- Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most comfortable hiking temperatures and rich warm light. Summer sunrises are early (before 5:30 am) and hikes must be completed before 10:00 am due to heat. Winter (December–February) brings the latest sunrises and often dramatic cloud formations over the Judean desert.
Frequently asked questions
What time is sunrise at Masada?
Masada sunrise varies throughout the year — typically between 5:10 am in summer (June/July) and 6:35 am in winter (December/January). The Snake Path takes 45–60 minutes from the eastern car park, so plan to start hiking 90 minutes before sunrise. Use the calculator above to get the exact time for your date.
When is golden hour in Israel?
Golden hour in Israel is the roughly 60 minutes after sunrise and 60 minutes before sunset. Summer sunsets are around 7:30–8:00 pm; winter sunsets around 4:30–5:00 pm. The Dead Sea and desert landscapes are especially dramatic in golden hour light — the mineral haze over the Dead Sea glows amber.
What is blue hour and when does it happen in Israel?
Blue hour is the period of civil twilight just before sunrise (civil dawn to sunrise) and just after sunset (sunset to end of civil twilight). The sky glows deep blue before colour enters the scene. In Israel, blue hour lasts roughly 20–30 minutes. Haifa's Bahá'í Gardens and Jerusalem's Old City walls are particularly striking during blue hour.
Can I access Masada before sunrise?
Yes. The eastern car park gates open at 4:00 am for sunrise hikers. The Snake Path does not have an official minimum opening time for early access — hikers with head torches can start climbing from around 4:30 am. The cable car does not run before sunrise. Always verify current INPA gate times at masada.org.il before your visit.
Is the Shabbat candlelighting time shown accurate?
Times are calculated from sunset using standard astronomical formulas and are accurate to within ±2 minutes. Candlelighting is shown at 18 minutes before sunset, the common Israeli standard. Some communities use 30 or 40 minutes earlier — check with Chabad.org for your specific community.
